Apple WWDC 2021: Rumours, leaks and what to expect

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is commencing today (7 June) as a virtual event for the second year running. As usual, the Cupertino tech giant is keeping details of its new releases under wraps, but a few reports suggest that some exciting new products will be unveiled at the event.

Spatial Audio

In May 2021, Apple announced the upcoming rollout of Apple Music Lossless and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Not much has been revealed about Spatial Audio – all that’s known is that it’s supported by Apple’s AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. However, a special event, ‘Introducing Spatial Audio’ may provide more insight into the format.

The Spatial Audio event will be taking place at 12 pm PT, two hours after the main WWDC keynote, MacRumors reports.

New MacBook Pros

Although new hardware isn’t always a promise at an Apple WWDC event, we could see the launch of new MacBook Pros this time around. It was reported in May that new MacBook Pros with an enhanced M1 chip could come as early as summer 2021. News of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup was reported by Bloomberg, building on the impressive first wave of Apple Silicon machines. We scored the M1 MacBook Pro a 9/10 in our review, which you can read here.

According to the report, the new MacBook Pros will be available with an option of two chips. Both will feature eight high-performance cores and two energy-efficient cores, but you’ll have the choice between 16 or 32 graphics cores. In addition, the maximum RAM will supposedly move up to 64GB from the previous 16GB in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. We may also see the return of the beloved MagSafe charger and an extension of ports for users needing plenty of connections.

iOS 15

The next version of iOS is rumoured to be announced today, with Apple dropping a few hints of its arrival – notably, the WWDC21 banner, which features a ton of Memojis. iOS 15 is reported to bring updates to notification preferences for iPhone and iPad users, with custom categories for managing notifications and automatic replies.

New changes to iMessage may make the app “more of a social network and better competing with Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp”, according to Bloomberg. These features are still in early development though and could be released at a later date.

Updates to privacy preferences might allow users to see which apps are silently collecting data from them, while a redesign of the home screen for iPadOS could be on the horizon.

Apple may be gearing up to release a new homeOS, which will presumably bring new features and accessibility to Apple TV and HomePod Mini.

Apple VR/AR

Rumours have been circulating of the announcement of an Apple VR headset at WWDC21. Supposedly, the headset will feature two 8K displays, over a dozen cameras to track movement and will carry a price tag of around $3,000. GSMArena says this announcement may be unlikely, though.

Tune in to the event below.
