M-Audio’s BX3 and BX4 monitors are powerful, compact and extremely affordable

M-Audio BX4 BX3

Floridian music technology manufacturer M-Audio is building on the success of its BX monitor series with the unveiling of the BX3 and BX4.

The two new monitors are seriously compact and are built for multi-purpose use, whether it’s making or listening to music, gaming, watching movies or live streaming. The brand claims that the duo provides “the ultimate solution for compact pro-grade sound”.

The BX3 and BX4 look identical, with the only difference being the size of the military-grade Black Kevlar low-frequency drivers. The M-Audio BX3 features a 3.5-inch driver, while the BX4’s driver is 4.5-inch, with both featuring a computer-optimised 1-inch natural silk dome tweeters to project your audio across a frequency range of 69Hz–22kHz. The computer optimisation ensures accurate stereo imaging, while a rear port on the monitors adds extended low-frequency response. An acoustically-inert MDF cabinet with a bass-reflex design gives you a deep sound, despite the size of the M-Audio monitors.

For more sonic control, M-Audio’s BX3 and BX4 can be fine-tuned via high and low EQ dials on the rear panel. There is also a Left/Right Active Speaker Position that dictates which speaker is on the left or right side. With quarter-inch, eighth-inch and RCA inputs, the BX monitors can accommodate a wide range of audio sources, whether its a mixer, audio interface or just a mobile phone.

For those just starting out in music production, M-Audio’s BX3 and BX4 could be ideal, especially given that it comes with a lite version of Pro Tools. Avid and M-Audio collaborated to create Pro Tools First M-Audio Edition which includes 20 Avid Effect plug-ins to record, mix and edit any audio project. Plus, at just £85 for the BX3 and £100 for the BX4, they seem like they might be a bargain.
